The Benefits of Juicing Beets
Beets, whether consumed raw, cooked, or juiced, have many health benefits and can contribute to a healthy lifestyle and establishing healthy habits.

Here are a few of those benefits:
- Drinking just one cup of beetroot juice a day can help lower blood sugar levels.
- Beets are high in nutrients but low in calories, making them a great ingredient to add to both juices and a variety of savory dishes (like this vegan hummus beet pasta recipe) or even desserts (like these delicious vegan beetroot brownies).
- Beets are high in potassium, folate, and vitamin C, among other micronutrients.
- The nitrate in beetroot juice is linked to various health benefits such as a lower risk of heart disease and improving overall cardiovascular health.
Beetroot Juice – Ingredient Notes & Substitutions
The following is an overview of the ingredients you’ll need to make this sweet beetroot juice recipe, as well as recommended substitutions. For the exact measurements, be sure to refer to the recipe card below.

- Beets: beets come in several colors and varieties such as golden beets, striped “candy cane” beets, and the most common one, red beets. For this recipe, I used red beets because they’re the easiest to find and result in a juice that’s a beautiful ruby-red color. You can, of course, use any variety you’d like. If you can’t find beets, you can also use carrots.
- Apples: I like using sweet red apples such as Gala or Jonagold varieties when juicing beets, but any apples will do! Instead of apples, you can use sweet fruits like pears or pineapple.
- Celery: for this recipe, I used celery stalks without the greens. You can juice the greens too, but keep in mind that this might alter both the color and taste of the juice slightly. As an alternative to Celery, you can use peeled cucumber (peeling them will result in a similar juice color, but if that’s not important to you, you can skip that step), or butter lettuce.
- Ginger: ginger gives this recipe a nice little extra kick. You can either omit it or use turmeric instead. Tip: if you’re not used to juicing ginger, be sure to start with a very small amount to see if you like it first.

Recommended Equipment
- A juicer: a cold press/slow juicer is ideal for this juice recipe. I personally love my Nama J2 juicer.
- Optional accessories: all other accessories are optional, but I’d recommend drinking juice with a reusable glass straw to protect your teeth. For easy storage, glass bottles are my favorite!

How to Make This Beetroot Juice Recipe (Step by Step)
The following is a step-by-step overview of how to make this beetroot juice recipe. For a recap, be sure to check out the recipe card below.
Step One: Prepare the Produce

Start by preparing the produce: wash the apples, beets, celery, and ginger, then pat them dry using a kitchen towel. No need to peel any of the produce, but I personally like to cut off the ends of the beets and celery. Depending on the kind of juicer you’re using, you might need to cut the produce into smaller pieces.
Step Two: Add The Prepared Produce To Your Juicer

Next, add the produce to your juicer’s hopper (if your juicer doesn’t have a hopper, start by turning the juicer on, then adding each piece one by one).
Step Three: Start Juicing

Turn your juicer on and watch the magic happen!

Tip: if any of the produce pieces get stuck, simply use your juicer’s reverse setting. This should solve it instantly. Optionally, you can strain your juice using a strainer (this simply depends on your personal preference).

Step Four: Serve and Enjoy Your Beetroot Juice!

If you’re enjoying your beetroot juice right away, pour it into glasses over some ice cubes. If you’re planning on drinking it later (I recommend not waiting more than 2-3 days), transfer it to glass bottles with airtight lids and store them in the fridge.

Recipe & Storage Tips

Here are a few tips to ensure the best possible result when making this juice.
- Refrigerate your produce: If you’re planning on drinking your juice right away, but don’t want to use ice cubes, be sure to refrigerate your produce, including the fruit, beforehand. That way your juice will be extra cold and fresh when you drink it!
- If you can, use a slow/cold-press juicer: if you’re currently looking for a new juicer but are unsure which one is best for you, I highly recommended looking into a slow juicer (which masticates the produce to extract the juice without using heat) over a centrifugal juicer (which uses a motor). I personally have both the Nama J2 juicer and the Nama J3 juicer (which is the travel-sized version of the J2). If you decided to opt for a Nama juicer, be sure to use the code “BOV10” at checkout for 10% Off.
- Since cold-pressed juice doesn’t include preservatives, it’s best enjoyed right after juicing it. If, however, you decide to store your juice for later use, I’d recommend storing them in glass bottles or jars that come with an airtight lid in the fridge for a maximum of 2-3 days. Any longer than that, juice is best stored in the freezer, either in ice cube trays or freezer-safe BPA-free bottles.
Beetroot Juice – Frequently Asked Questions

Is it OK to juice raw beets?

Yes! Roots can be eaten both raw and cooked. However, raw beets are quite hard, making them less convenient to eat whole (it’s usually recommended to slice them very thinly, marinating them, and or blending them to make them easier to eat raw). Juicing them is the perfect and easiest way to consume beets raw!
Is juiced beetroot good for you?

Yes! beets have many health benefits and they’re an excellent vegetable to juice. To read more about the benefits of juicing beets, be sure to read the “The Benefits of Juicing Beets” section above.
Do I need to peel beets for juicing?

You don’t need to peel beets before juicing them, but I do recommend washing them to remove any extra dirt (you can use water and then dry them with a kitchen towel or else use a firm dry brush made for scrubbing vegetables). I personally also like to cut off the ends of beets before juicing them.
Is it OK to drink fresh beet juice everyday?

While it’s OK to drink small amounts of fresh beet juice everyday, it’s always best to practice moderation and focus on eating a varied diet overall. I like to rotate my juice recipes for that reason.
