The Benefits of Juicing

Juicing has many benefits that contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Here are just a three of them.

  • It’s an easy way to incorporate a higher volume of fresh fruits and vegetables: if you’re not someone who eats a lot of big salads on a regular basis, juicing and blending your fresh produce is an excellent way to consume large quantities in a shorter amount of time.
  • It’s fun, easy, and less expensive (in the long run) to make at home: even though juicing requires a juicer which cab be quite the investment, if you make juice regularly, it is much cheaper to make at home compared to buying cold-pressed juice at a juice bar or health food market.
  • It’s an excellent way to stay hydrated: water is, of course, number one, when it comes to staying hydrated. That said, fresh juices are a wonderful complement thanks to their high water content.

🌿Reminder: As with everything in life, balance is key. If you’re new to juicing, be sure to take it slow at first and to combine juicing with a wholesome, fiber and protein rich diet, as well as other lifestyle habits that make you feel good. If you have any health concerns whatsoever, please be sure to consult a healthcare professional before making changes to your existing diet.

Green Juice Ingredient Notes & Substitutions

4-Ingredient Green Juice ingredients overview

Pineapple: when it comes to pineapples, ripeness is key! Make sure your pineapple is perfectly ripe in order to ensure it’s sweet enough. If you’re using a fresh pineapple, you can either store the other half (you’ll need 1/2 a pineapple for this green juice recipe) in the fridge to make a fruit salad or more juice later, or cut it into small chunks and freeze it to add to smoothie recipes.

🍍❄Here’s a tip for when you’re freezing fruit: freeze the fruit chunks on a baking tray lined with parchment paper first, then transfer them to a reusable container later on. This way the chunks won’t be stuck to each other and it’ll be easier to use the exact portion size you need. Instead of buying a whole pineapple, you can also buy pre-cut pineapple chunks or slices. (Note: Don’t use frozen pineapple to make juice though.)

If you don’t like or can’t find pineapple, any sweet fruit that yields a lot of juice, such as apples or oranges, will work.

Spinach: you can use regular fresh spinach or baby spinach (I used the latter). Since spinach is very high in volume and this green juice recipes uses quite a lot of it, you might need to add it to your juicer in batches. Leafy greens like kale or lettuce are the best substitute for spinach in juices.

Celery: you can juice celery with or without the leaves, but the taste will be a bit milder without them. I personally didn’t use them for this green juice recipe, but you can absolutely include them. One of the best alternatives to celery is cucumber since it yields a lot of juice and is quite mild in flavor. Another alternative is fennel. Fennel, however, has a much more intense taste that isn’t to everyone’s liking, so be sure to try it before committing to it!

Ginger: always use fresh ginger root when juicing, not ginger powder or paste. The peel can be left on or cut off, but I always include it because it doesn’t make a huge difference taste wise and ginger peel also has a ton of benefits. The taste of ginger can be intense, to start with a little and increase the amount over time if you’re new to juicing with ginger. Turmeric root is a great alternative to ginger, just note that it has a bright orange color and your final juice might therefore have a slightly different hue. You can also omit the ginger and/or add some fresh herbs like mint, basil, parsley, or cilantro to your green juice instead.

  • A juicer: a cold press/slow juicer is ideal for this recipe. Scroll down to see the one I recommend.
  • Optional accessories: all other accessories are optional, but I’d recommend drinking juice with a reusable glass straw to protect your teeth. For easy storage, glass jars are always useful and can be repurposed in multiple ways.

How to Make This 4-Ingredient Green Juice

Prepare the produce

If your spinach is pre-washed, no need to wash it again. If it’s not, you can wash it, but make sure you dry it so that your juice doesn’t end up being too watery. Same for the celery. Next, remove the rind of the pineapple by slicing it off using a large knife and cut it into chunks or bigger pieces depending on the kind of juicer you’re using. Finally, peel the lemon and remove any visible seeds. The ginger can be juiced with or without the peel (I usually keep it).

Add everything to your juicer

If you’re using a juicer like the one I have, you’ll be able to add everything at once (either the whole ingredients or smaller pieces), but if you’re using a different kind of juicer, you might need to cut the produce into smaller pieces and then add them one by one once you turn on it on.

What Kind of Juicer is Best?

Nama J3 black juicer next to fresh produce

A cold-pressed juicer (also referred to as a slow juicer) is the best option to preserve a maximum of nutrients and juice yield. The term “slow juicer” refers to its gentler, masticating process, compared to a centrifugal juicer. The juicing process itself is very quick, however, so don’t let the term scare you!

The juicer brand I personally use and recommend is Nama. My absolute favorite juicer is the Nama J2 (you can read my detailed review here). They also have a newer model, the Nama J3 (which is the one I used for this green juice recipe), and it’s essentially a more compact, travel-friendly and more affordable version of the J2.

Quality wise, they’re on the same level, so which one you choose will depend on your personal preferences and needs. The J3 is ideal for smaller kitchens and students, for instance, whereas the J2 is great for anyone who likes to juice higher quantities and/or who has a more spacious kitchen.

What To Do With The Juice Pulp?

Here are some ideas and suggestions of what to do with your juice pulp.

  • Compost: if you’re discarding your juice pulp, the most environmentally friendly option is to compost it. Most cities and communities have public compost stations (google the name of your city/town and “compost” to find one near you). If you don’t have a garden and there are no composting stations near you, there are smaller home composters.
  • Freeze for later: some people like to freeze their juice pulp in reusable containers in order to either compost or use them for recipes later on.
  • Add to sweet & savory recipes: juice pulp is a great, fiber rich addition to recipes like savory muffins. Fruit juice pulp specifically can additionally be added to many plant-based dessert recipes, thereby increasing the fiber content. If you want to store your fruit and vegetable pulp separately, simply juice the sweet ingredients first, then set the pulp aside, before repeating the same steps with the remaining ingredients.

Equipment

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh pineapple chunks peeled (1 cup of pineapple is about 1/4 cup of pineapple chunks)
  • 6 cups baby spinach
  • 3 small celery stalks
  • 1 thumb ginger root

Instructions

  • Prepare your produce: if your spinach is pre-washed, no need to wash it again. If it's not, you can wash it, but make sure you dry it so that your juice doesn't end up being too watery. Same for the celery. Next, remove the rind of the pineapple by slicing it off using a large knife and cut it into chunks or bigger pieces depending on the kind of juicer you're using. Finally, peel the lemon and remove any visible seeds. The ginger can be juiced with or without the peel (I usually keep it).
  • Add your produce to the juicer: if you're using a juicer like the Nama J2 or J3, you'll be able to add most of your produce at once. If you're using a different kind of juicer, you'll need to add the pieces one by one. Either way, make sure you add the ginger and spinach first. Smaller and lighter produce is easier to juice if it's followed by bigger and/or heavier pieces like pineapple and celery.
  • Start juicing: turn on your juicer and let the magic happen!
  • Serve & enjoy: pour your juice into glasses or jars. For an ice cold refreshment, be sure to add some ice cubes. Enjoy your fresh green juice, ideally with a glass straw.

Notes

  • This recipe makes about 2 cups/500mL which is one large or two small servings. The exact amount will depend on the size of both your pineapple and celery stalks.
  • To make this juice sweeter, increase the amount of pineapple and/or reduce the amount of spinach. To make it less sweet, decrease the amount of pineapple and increase the amount of celery and/or spinach.
  • Any juice leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Just make sure you shake the juice before drinking it if you’re storing it in the fridge first.
